Tibet: The Roof of the World

Tibet, often called the "Roof of the World", is located in the heart of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau on the southwestern border of China. It shares its borders with the Chinese provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan, Qinghai, and Xinjiang, and to the south it borders with India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim, and Myanmar, while Kashmir lies to the west. As the highest region on Earth, Tibet lies at an average elevation of 4,900 metres (16,000 feet) above sea level, offering breathtaking views and truly unique landscapes.

This majestic land is not only blessed with natural beauty but also rich in cultural heritage. With over fifty peaks higher than 7,000 metres (22,960 ft) and eleven Himalayan peaks higher than 8,000 metres (26,240 ft), Tibet is a dream destination for both adventurers and spiritual seekers. More than two million people call this extraordinary region home, living among vast grasslands, snow-capped mountains, sacred lakes and ancient temples.

Tibet's spiritual identity is deeply rooted in Buddhism, which has shaped the local culture for more than 1,300 years. The Tibetan form of Buddhism – often called Lamaism – is uniquely rich, with its traditions deeply embedded in daily life. Monasteries and temples are scattered across the landscape, containing centuries-old religious art influenced by Indian and Chinese Buddhist styles, forming a distinctive and revered link of oriental Buddhist heritage.

The people of Tibet – including Tibetans, Monpas, Lopas and Tibetan Muslims – preserve their own traditions, from births and marriages to funerals and festivals. These traditions are celebrated throughout the year with lively festivals that shows the joyful spirit and deep spirituality of the Tibetan lifestyle.

A trip to Tibet is more than just a travel experience - it's an exploration of timeless landscapes, sacred traditions and profound peace. Join us as we explore this land of mountains, monks, mystery and endless adventure.

Trip Summary: Mt. Kailash and Manasarovar Pilgrimage Tour

Mount Kailash Yatra is one of the most sacred and spiritually enriching journeys to the far western region of Tibet. Revered by Hindus as the divine abode of Lord Shiva and regarded by both Hindu and Buddhist traditions as the spiritual centre of the universe, Mount Kailash is a powerful symbol of faith, purity and transcendence.

Mount Kailash, located at an altitude of 6,638 metres (21,778 ft), is not open for climbing due to its religious significance. Instead, pilgrims and visitors undertake a sacred circumambulation (Pradakshina) – known as kora or parikrama – which is a 52-kilometre walk around the mountain. Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bonpos believe that completing this journey purifies sins and brings one closer to spiritual liberation.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva resides on Mount Kailash, where he indulges in deep meditation, divine union with Goddess Parvati, and spiritual practice. This legend attracts countless devotees and seekers from all over the world who come to experience the divine energy of this sacred mountain. For Buddhists, Mount Kailash is believed to be the home of Demchok (Chakrasamvara), a symbol of supreme bliss, and is considered a powerful site for attaining enlightenment. It is said that Lord Buddha himself visited this place in the 5th century BC.

The trip also includes a visit to the mystical Mansarovar Lake, one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world, regarded as a source of purity and spiritual clarity. The Sanskrit word manas means mind or consciousness, and sarovara means sacred lake – together they signify the "lake of knowledge"." Stretching over a circumference of 88 kilometres and with a depth of up to 90 metres, this stunning lake is especially captivating on full-moon nights, when its calm waters reflect an unreal, celestial glow.

Near to Manasarovar is Rakshas Tal or "Ravan Kund" - named after the rakshasa king Ravana of Hindu mythology. Though it is less revered, its dramatic and stark beauty adds to the mystical environment of the area.

Mount Kailash and Manasarovar Yatra is more than a physical journey – it is a path of inner transformation. Whether you are a spiritual pilgrim or a cultural explorer, this once in a lifetime experience offers you a deep connection with nature, ancient traditions, and intense spiritual energies.

Health & Altitude Information

Travelling to Tibet and the area around Mount Kailash means travelling to high altitudes, often exceeding 4,000 metres (13,000 ft). While this experience is extremely rewarding, it can also be physically exhausting. We strongly recommend that anyone with heart or lung disease, high blood pressure or blood-related problems should consult a medical professional before booking this trip.

Altitude sickness is not uncommon and can affect anyone, regardless of age or fitness level. Symptoms such as mild headache, loss of appetite, nausea or fatigue may occur during the first few days. These are usually temporary and subside on their own as your body adjusts to the altitude.

To help minimise the effects of altitude:

  • Stay well hydrated – we recommend drinking around 4 liters of water daily.
  • Pace yourself – walk slowly and avoid overexertion.
  • Breathe deeply, and take frequent short breaks during walks or hikes.
  • Rest well, especially during the first few days.
  • We build acclimatisation time into the itinerary to support your health and comfort throughout the journey.

During your Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, we provide carefully planned vegetarian meals that are both nourishing and suitable for high-altitude travel. Accommodation: Hotel in Kathmandu

Day 02: Sacred Temples and Spiritual Insights in Kathmandu

After a restful night, your day begins with a visit to two of Kathmandu's most sacred and spiritually significant sites. These tours provide a deeper understanding of the deep Hindu traditions of Nepal and show their close connection with your upcoming Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage.

Your first stop is the Pashupatinath Temple, one of the holiest temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located on the banks of the sacred Bagmati River, this ancient temple complex attracts pilgrims from all over the world. Here you will witness deeply spiritual rituals of devotion and, if time permits, even funeral ceremonies that reflect the Hindu belief in life, death and reincarnation.

Next, visit Budhanilkantha, where there is a wonderful stone statue of Lord Vishnu reclining on a bed of cosmic serpents. Carved from a single block of black stone and resting peacefully in a pool of water, this sacred statue is both visually stunning and spiritually heart-touching.

After a morning guided tour, the afternoon is open for relaxing, personal reflection, or exploring the busy streets of Kathmandu at your own pace. Whether you choose to relax at your hotel or wander through the local shops and cafes, this is a perfect moment to soak in the city's atmosphere before your high-altitude adventure begins.
Accommodation: Hotel in Kathmandu

Day 03: Scenic Drive to Syabrubesi or Timure (1,450m)(Approx. 150 km)

After a hearty breakfast, you will begin your journey north towards the remote Himalayan range. Today's trip will take you to Syabrubesi or Timure, a small but important transit town near the Rasuwa Gadhi border in Tibet.

Covering a distance of around 150 kilometres, the route passes through lush green hills, gurgling rivers, terraced fields and charming hill villages, offering a beautiful contrast to the busy city life of Kathmandu. As you climb higher up the mountain range, the views become even more dramatic - deep river valleys, dense forests and rugged Himalayan foothills surround you along the way.

Depending on road conditions and accommodation availability, your overnight stay will be in Syabrubesi or Timure. Both small cities serve as major stopover points for travelers heading to the Friendship Bridge and the Tibetan Plateau.

In the evening, relax and acclimatise yourself, enjoy the cool mountain breeze and prepare mentally and physically for the adventure ahead.
Accommodation: Hotel in Syabrubesi or Timure

Day 04: Cross into Tibet – Drive to Kerung (4,130m)

After breakfast, start your journey towards Nepal-Tibet border. A short drive will take you to Rasuwa Gadhi, where you will cross the Friendship Bridge, marking your official entry into Tibet, China.

Here, you will complete the necessary customs and immigration formalities on both sides of the border. Although the process can take some time, our experienced team will assist you every step of the way to ensure a smooth and comfortable transition.

Once the formalities are done, continue your journey towards Kerung (also called Gyarong) – your first overnight stay in Tibet. Situated at an altitude of 4,130 m, this quiet border town offers a great introduction to the stunning beauty and vast landscape of the Tibetan Plateau.

You'll notice that the air gets thinner as you reach altitude, so reserve the rest of the day for rest and light activity to help your body begin the acclimatisation process. Move slowly, drink plenty of fluids, and feel the peace of the higher space that sets the tone for the spiritual journey ahead.
Accommodation: Hotel in Kerung

Day 05: Acclimatisation Day at Kerung

Today is dedicated to rest and acclimatisation in Kerung, an essential part of preparing your body for the higher altitudes you will encounter in the days to come. Kerung, located at an altitude of 4,130 metres (13,550 ft), provides the ideal environment to gradually adjust to the thinner air of the Tibetan Plateau.

You're encouraged to take it easy - light walks around town are ideal. Stretch your legs and slowly explore the surrounding area, where you'll find beautiful mountain views, fresh alpine air, and glimpses of Tibetan culture. This is also a great time to check your luggage, stay hydrated, and connect with your fellow travelers.

Our experienced guides will keep an eye on your well-being and provide useful tips on altitude awareness and self-care. Acclimatisation is a crucial factor in the success of your Kailash Mansarovar trip, so take this day seriously and give your body the necessary time.
Accommodation: Hotel in Kerung

Day 06: Drive to Saga or Dongba

Today's journey will take you deep into the vast and mysterious landscape of the Tibetan Plateau. After breakfast, you will start your journey from Kerung towards Saga or Dongba, a major transit point on the sacred route to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar.

As the road progresses, you will pass through wide river valleys, high plateaus and remote nomadic settlements, offering a glimpse of the traditional Tibetan lifestyle. Along the way, you'll encounter dramatic natural scenery, including the Kaire Falls - a beautiful spot where cascading water breaks the silence of the rugged forest.

The path gradually climbs in elevation, and the landscape transforms into stark but breathtaking terrain stretching to the horizon. The journey, though long, is filled with awe-inspiring views and quiet moments perfect for introspection or to feel the spiritual essence of the journey.

By late afternoon or evening, you will reach Saga or Dongba, where you will rest for the night and acclimatise to the altitude.
Accommodation: Hotel in Saga or Dongba

Day 07: Drive to Lake Manasarovar via Mayum La Pass (4,558m), acclimatise

Today is the most awaited day of your spiritual journey. After an early breakfast, set out on a long but mesmerising journey across the vast and windswept Tibetan Plateau, travelling from Prayang to climb the Mayum La Pass – a high mountain pass that offers stunning panoramic views of the rugged, untouched landscape.

The views get even more dramatic as you venture further into this sacred land. Beneath the snow-capped mountains lie endless plains dotted with grazing yaks and the tents of nomads. The journey may be long, but the changing scenery – rivers, open plateaus and distant Himalayan peaks – keeps the soul engaged and the mind excited.

As the evening falls, a magical sight awaits you—the first glimpse of Mount Kailash and the calm waters of Lake Manasarovar. This moment is extremely emotional for many pilgrims. Considered one of the holiest lakes in the world, Mansarovar is believed to be a source of sanctity and spiritual energy, located in a serene location surrounded by mountains, including the sacred Mount Gurla Mandhata.

Enjoy the serenity of this sacred site as the sun casts golden hues on the turquoise waters of the lake. Spend the night near its quiet shores, relax and prepare for the spiritual experiences to come.
Accommodation: Guest House near Lake Manasarovar

Day 08: Sacred Rituals at Lake Manasarovar and Drive to Tarchen (Darchen)

Begin this spiritually significant day by taking a dip in the sacred Manasarovar Lake, believed to purify the soul and cleanse karma. Surrounded by the serenity of the mountains, this place is a highly personal and powerful experience for many pilgrims. After bathing, attend the puja (prayer ceremony) and homa (fire ritual) by the lake – this is an opportunity to express gratitude, receive blessings and connect with the divine energies of this sacred land.

Spend time in the peaceful environment, contemplate in peace or meditate near the lake. The calm waters and the majestic backdrop of Mount Kailash create an unforgettable spiritual atmosphere.

In the afternoon, continue your journey with a scenic drive to Tarchen (also known as Darchen) – the base camp for the kora (circumambulation) of Mount Kailash. Tarchen (Darchen), located at the foot of the sacred mountain, is the departure point for your three-day parikrama of Kailash. The holy pilgrimage will become even more intense in the coming days, so be prepared mentally and physically for the journey ahead.
Accommodation: Guest House in Tarchen (Darchen)

Day 09: Kailash Parikrama Begins – Tarchen (Darchen) to Dirapuk via Yam Dwar

The holy Kailash Parikrama begins today, a life-transforming spiritual journey around the sacred Mount Kailash. The trek begins as you leave from Tarchen (Darchen), passing through a picturesque landscape which becomes even more awe-inspiring as you approach the holy mountain. The trail takes you through a stunning valley, dotted with waterfalls, rocky cliffs and panoramic views of the lofty Kailash peak.

As you proceed further, you will pass through Yam Dwar, the gateway to Kailash, where many pilgrims stop to pray and seek blessings. It is a spiritually powerful place, often referred to in Hindu mythology as the "Gateway to Death", symbolising passage to higher realms.

The trek lasts for around 18 km (about 7 hours), and each step takes you closer to the divine energy of the mountain. The landscape keeps changing along the way, and you will be surrounded by breathtaking views of the Kailash range. The heights can be challenging, but the support of the group and the grandeur of the surroundings make this a truly unforgettable experience.

Your destination today is Dirapuk, a small and quiet village situated at the foothills of the northern face of Mount Kailash. This is where you will rest and reflect on the day’s journey, and prepare to continue your sacred circumambulation.
Accommodation: Guest House at Dirapuk

Day 10: Trek to Zuthulphuk via Dolma La Pass (5,630m)

Today is the most challenging and spiritually intense day of your journey, as you will cross the Dolma La pass, the highest point on the Kailash Parikrama, located at an altitude of 5,630 metres (18,100 ft). This journey will test your physical endurance, but it is also a deeply transformative spiritual experience.

The day begins with a steady climb towards Dolma La, where the air becomes thinner and the landscape more rugged. As you move up, you will pass by Shiva-Sthal – a sacred place dedicated to Lord Shiva – and Parvati-Sthal, where pilgrims stop to pray and receive divine blessings. These places are significant in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions, adding an extra level of spiritual depth to your trip.

At the top of Dolma La, you will get amazing views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges and the vast Tibetan plateau. Here, many pilgrims spend some moments to contemplate and meditate, and feel the divine presence of the mountain and heaven.

From the pass, you descend to Gauri Kund, a small, tranquil lake with crystal-clear waters that is believed to be blessed by Goddess Parvati. It is a peaceful place to relax and refresh yourself before proceeding to the final leg of the trek.

After crossing the pass, you will descend to Zuthulphuk, a remote cave famous for being associated with the great Tibetan yogi Milarepa. Milarepa is said to have performed miracles here, and the cave is a place of profound spiritual significance.

The journey to Zuthulphuk is long and arduous, but the sense of accomplishment and spiritual connection will make it worthwhile.
Accommodation: Guest House in Zuthulphuk

Day 11: Complete Kora & Drive to Saga/Dongba

Your Kailash Parikrama will be completed this morning. After a short climb of around 7 km you will complete the holy circumambulation of Mount Kailash. This final stop marks the culmination of your spiritual journey around the sacred mountain, an experience that is both physically challenging and deeply transformational.

Once you complete the trek, you will join your transportation team and enjoy a nice lunch. The atmosphere is filled with a sense of accomplishment and awe as you reflect on the sacred journey you have just completed.

In the afternoon, you will begin your return journey, making your way through the serene Manasarovar Lake, where you can pause for a last view of its calm waters and the towering presence of Mount Kailash in the distance. Traversing the Tibetan Plateau, you will reach Dongba or Saga, where you will stay overnight to rest and recuperate after physically exhausting days.
